Claudia Chiappino

Born in Turin on March 13, 1970, she graduated in Mining Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin, specializing in Geo-technologies, with a focus on underground works, quarries, and mines. Her degree project was field-based, involving an experimental thesis addressing safety issues in the modeling of the ancient Brosso Mine in the Val Chiusella (TO), aimed at its reuse for tourism and cultural purposes. In 1995, she co-founded ACTM (Association for the Conservation of Mining Traditions) to promote exploration, studies, and research on the mining heritage of the Alps.

After a three-year experience in a large construction company specializing in tunnels, since 2000, she has held the position of Quarry Manager for multinational companies in the raw materials sector, becoming the Director of Quarry Operations and responsible for the operational management of mining activities and relations with public administrations to obtain and maintain permits, including the closure and environmental recovery of quarries, as well as their enhancement and reuse.

In this context, she initiated the implementation of the digitization of company extraction site databases and, in line with the international board, developed a qualitative and quantitative modeling of mineral resources and their monitoring, aiming at the optimal productive development of these resources.

In addition to her duties, she also handles the environmental certifications ISO 14000/EMAS for company sites.

Since 2010, she left her role as Mining Manager for large companies to pursue the path of a Freelance Mining Engineer, focusing on the design and management of quarries and mines, Sustainable Development (LCA, EPD) in the production of stone and industrial materials, Research & Development on “raw materials,” and the historical specialization in the recovery and enhancement of decommissioned mining sites.

In all these fields, she promotes digital and technological development applied to the supply chain to align the national landscape with international standards, from design to real-time monitoring.

She has always collaborated with major Italian universities specializing in mining and geological subjects (Politecnico di Torino, University of Earth Sciences of Turin, Milan, Rome, Ferrara, Bologna, CGT of Siena) for research projects, consulting, and teaching in mining-related fields.

Since the early years of university, she has written technical and divulgative articles for specialized magazines in the extractive and speleological sectors (“Cieli Aperti,” “Quarry and Construction,” “Piemonte Parchi,” “Opera Ipogea”), among others.
